CodeAIHQ is an independent publication devoted to the close analysis of film. Its essays examine how a film is constructed: how a frame is composed, how light and color carry meaning, how a director shapes the viewer’s attention, and how visual effects serve, or undermine, the story.
Approach
Most film writing stops at judgment: whether a film works or not. My interest lies in the mechanics behind that judgment. Each piece starts from a specific sequence, shot, or technical decision, and traces it back to its narrative and aesthetic function. I draw on film theory and production practice, and I name my references so that every claim can be checked against the film itself.
What I Cover
- Cinematography: Framing, composition, lighting, lens choice, camera movement, and color grading as tools of meaning.
- Direction & Narrative: Staging, pacing, editing, and structure, including how directors build a recognizable visual signature across their work.
- Effects & VFX: The integration of CGI, compositing, and motion graphics, and how technical craft shapes the cinematic experience.
About the Author
I’m Brandon, a self-taught film writer and software developer. I have watched more than 600 films across every genre, and I approach them the way I approach code: by looking for the structure underneath. I once planned to study film, but my career took me into software development, and cinema has remained my main field of study ever since. The work of Hitchcock, Kubrick, Scorsese, Tarantino, and Nolan shaped how I read a film, and their control over framing, rhythm, and structure is where most of my analysis begins. I write here to share that close reading with anyone who wants to look at films more carefully.
Editorial Standards
Film stills appear only where they support the analysis being made, and are credited to their respective studios and rights holders. Corrections and factual updates are welcome, and I revise articles when errors are found.
